..find your family connections in Donegal...
My grandmother, Anne McBrearty, left Ireland over 60 years ago, moved to Brooklyn and married a man named Charles Martin. My mother, Cay Lanigan, always wanted to visit her mother's homeland, but died before she was able to do so. My daughter, Meghan, will be in Ireland, studying at University of Limerick this spring, and I am writing this in the hope that she will have an opportunity to connect with family. My great grandmother was Anne Boyle, and she married Frank Neddie McBrearty (whose mother's maiden name is...
My name is Anthony Gallagher. My mother was born Nora Philomena McBrearty and was born in Bogagh. She moved to England when she was about 18 years of age. She married my father, John Gallagher, and my father passed away when my mother was 6 months pregnant with me. She married James Sweeney around 7 years later. I am now aged 58 years of age and have a huge affinity to my past Irish heritage so was wondering how many relatives (I know I have many cousins) are still living in and around the Co. Donegal area. I am...

My ancestor, Robert Wray, came from Ireland to the United tates sometime before 1794. It is said that he came from Carrick, Shandrun, Donegal County, Ireland. His parents were John Wray (1740 Ireland-) and Elizabeth Taylor (1820 Scotland-). I would'nt be surprised that his surname was changed to Wray when he came to the States. I saw another spelling of Rae, but don't know if it is him. Any help would be appreciated. Barbara Miller
I have started to research my mother’s family who lived in Altclough Carrick Donegal. I have found them in the 1901 and 1911 census records but cannot find additional information. My mother was christened Bridget but we always knew her as Agnes. She was born in 1899, her mother was Marty (McGinley) Byrne. Her sisters Susan and Mary came to the US in the early 1900s. Mary dies sometime in the 1940s and was buried in an unmarked grave in Boston. Supposedly their father, John Byrne, came to the US and worked on the...
William Patrick Cunningham was born in Carrick about 1830. Based on our generational pattern of repeating given names, I speculate that he may have had an older, close relative named John who stayed behind. William Patrick got in some kind of trouble, I think maybe over a land disagreement, and he was imprisioned in Donegal Town. Someone smuggled a pocket knife in to him, and he used it to escape, leaving from Killybegs to then swim out to board a ship bound for Canada. My first cousin has that pocket knife now...
I am trying to determine where my GGGrandfather Patrick Mulloy was born. Patrick Mulloy was born around 1835 in ? He married Mary Gallagher around 1860. Does anybody from Crove, Kilcar have a Patrick Mulloy in their family tree? Or do they have any imformation about Mulloys from that area from 1800s to 1930s. The first mention I have for Mulloy from Meenavally is in the Griffiths valuation, I have the land records and it only mentions Gallaghers before then. I have since been told that Mulloys from Crove...
I am trying to find information on the family of Michael Doherty and Bridget Sweeny. In 1870's the family was living in Creenveen in the area known as Meenagara (various spellings) at the western base of Slieve League in Glen Leahan. The children of Michael and Bridget are Dominic (b. abt 1855), Biddy (b. abt 1860), Mary (b. abt 1862), Patrick (b. abt 1864), Michael (b. 1 Nov 1864), Owen (b. 12 May 1870), Ellen (b. abt 1871), Anne (b. abt 1873), and Sally (b. 0 Aug 1874). A great uncle of mine from Meenaveen...
Many years ago I visited Carrick looking for family but with little success. Perhaps you will have information. My grandfather, Patrick Gallagher, immigrated to Chester County, Pennsylvania before the census of 1860. He served in the American Civil War and his birthplace is listed as Carrick, Ireland. He was 22 in 1864. Family members indicate the Carrick listed is in Donegal. His father was William Gallagher and his mother Jane Clark Gallagher. Other family members coming to the US were William, born...
